French-German coach Gernot Rohr’s adventure with Etoile Sportive du Sahel is officially over after his team put on a miserable display in their final league match of the season to hand fierce rivals Esperance Sportive de Tunis the title.
The news was confirmed by team spokesman Taoufik Gahbiche, who insisted that the 4-1 scoreline of the match had nothing to do with the decision. Instead, he cited a lack of character and coaching know-how as the reason for the separation.
“We’ve gotten to the point where we can’t even have one more training session with him, especially from the standpoint of player discipline and the style of play,” explained Gahbiche in an interview with Mosaique FM. “If we didn’t have the CAF Champions League obligations then he wouldn’t have even stayed this long.”
The spokesman went on to say that Rohr did not adapt at all to the team’s management, players or the realities of Tunisian football. The former Ajaccio coach will meet with Etoile president Moez Driss one last time to settle financial issues and he will then be no longer be tied to the club.
