Orok Akarandut is now only two goals shy of the Nigerian league all-time goals record set by Ishaya Jatau in the 1995 season.
Jatau banged home 17 goals that season while featuring for Iwuanyanwu Nationale of Owerri (now Heartland FC). The record has yet to be broken ever since.
Over the years, the likes of Joetex Frimpong (Young Boys), Joseph Akpala (now with Club Brugge) and Ezenwa Otorogu, who has teamed up with Tunisia's Club Africain, have all come short of this record.
However, this season little known Akarandut may finally do so after he scored a brace for Akwa United in their 4-2 home win over FC Abuja at the weekend.
"I'm working hard to beat that record," said Akarandut.
His closest rival for the Goal King award is Sunshine Stars Ibrahim Babale, who has thus far netted 13 goals.
There are still four rounds of matches to be played before the end of the Nigerian league season.
