The 22-year-old was signed at the end of February on a contract that runs until the end of the season. But despite receiving his international clearance, he is yet to play for the Urban Warriors.
Ajax spokesman Thabiso ‘Shooz’ Mekuto explains to KickOff.com that the nature of the fixture list has made it difficult for the Cape club to hand Carbonnier his debut.
“Carbonnier was not registered with CAF to play in the Champions League, so he missed those two games. We have also not played a league game in a month, although he was on the bench in the Nedbank Cup,” said Mekuto. “He is part of the squad for the derby and could well make his debut," added Mekuto.
Mekuto also told KickOff.com that it is highly unlikely that Stanton Lewis, on loan from Ajax Amsterdam, will make an appearance any time soon. “Lewis needs to be assessed again by the medical team - he is in training, but not match training,” Mekuto added.
Meanwhile Santos striker Eleazar Rodgers is determined to make his mark on the Cape Town derby with a goal.
Rodgers says on the People’s Team’s website that Sunday’s loss to AmaZulu will have little effect on the team as they turn their attention to the derby.
“I don’t think the AmaZulu result will have any effect on the derby, because the fact that this is a derby brings its own motivation to the game. However we did not play badly against AmaZulu - I think we were a bit unlucky and we did not capitalise on our chances.”
After coming on as a substitute against AmaZulu, chances were limited for Rodgers to find the back of the net, but he is hopeful of getting a full game in which to make an impact against Ajax.
Wednesday night’s game will be the first match played at the Newlands Stadium for a couple of seasons - Rodgers believes the new venue could contribute positively to the game.
“There will be less wind and the pitch conditions will make it conducive to good football. I think it will be very exciting though,” he said.
Santos team manager Yusuf Gester reports that they will to go into this game minus the services of a trio of important players: Tyren Arendse is serving the remainder of his two match suspension, while Mogogi Gabomamong and Musa Otieno both picked up third yellow cards against AmaZulu, which will rule them out of the Derby.
On the other hand Ajax Cape Town will be without their top goal scorer Mabudi Khenyeza and defender Clayton Daniels, who are both serving a one match suspension."
