German newspaper Express is reporting that Galatasaray have renewed their interested in signing out of favor Bayer Leverkusen defender Karim Haggui, when his contract expires in June.
The Tunisian international has lost his starting place at the seventh placed Bundesliga side since his refusal to extend his current agreement last year.
According to the reports, Haggui’s agent will travel to Istanbul in the coming days to explore a possible agreement. However, the news of Galatasaray’s interest is somewhat surprising, considering that Haggui has already publicly stated that he doesn’t see himself moving from Germany to Turkey, and would rather play in the English Premier League or the Spanish Primera Division.
Haggui was included in Tunisian national team coach Humberto Coelho’s 24 man roster for the North African country’s first World Cup qualifier against Kenya on March 28th.
The Portuguese trainer got some criticism for the move from journalists, who said the selection was not consistent with his promise to only call up players who were getting consistent first team minutes with their respective club sides.
Coelho acknowledged the negative feedback but maintained that Haggui was a special exception because he is one of the pillars of the team, with international experience beyond his years.
