Official: Mehdi Carcela-Gonzalez Opts To Represent Belgium At International Level

The young midfielder has snubbed Morocco for his nation of birth after previous reports indicated that he could join the Atlas Lions...
An official statement on Standard Liege's website explains that young midfielder Mehdi Carcela-Gonzalez has made the decision to represent Belgium at international level.

The 20-year-old recently got a call-up from national coach Dick Advocaat, but he also had the chance to represent Morocco. The player asked some time to think about his international future before making a final decision.

An earlier report suggested that the Standard Liege starlet had made the decision to wear the Morocco jersey, but the Belgian FA was quick to contradict this news and the midfielder has now opted to play for Belgium instead.

Belgium missed out on qualification for the 2010 World Cup, but Carcela-Gonzalez is widely expected to make his official debut in a friendly game on November 18. No opponent has yet been scheduled for that date.
