Eredivisie giants Ajax have received some disturbing news from the treatment table in the build-up to their important league match against Rotterdam outfit Sparta.
Versatile defender Jan Vertonghen is being plagued by abdomen trouble and has been ruled out of the match. Head coach Marco van Basten has made the decision to rest the 22-year-old for the rest of this campaign.
Van Basten told newspaper De Telegraaf. "Jan could have finished the match against AZ, but we wanted to be careful. We want to have Vertonghen in the new season too."
The Belgian international has developed into one of the key players at Ajax this term. Vertonghen has made 26 league appearances, in which he has scored four goals.
