Alessandro Del Piero was recently voted by Tg1 as the best Italian athlete of 2008. The Juventus captain amassed 58.30% of the votes, with multiple MotoGP World Champion, Valentino Rossi coming in second with 18.68%.
After receiving his award, Del Piero gave his thoughts on the race for the Scudetto this season, as well as his dreams of playing at South Africa in 2010.
The Bianconeri are currently six points behind league leaders Inter Milan, a comfortable advantage for the Nerazzurri; however the Juve No. 10 believes that the gap is not unbridgeable.
“The championship is still wide open, and Inter are certainly not unbeatable,” he told Rai.
As for his dreams of playing at the World Cup in 2010, Pinturicchio was not afraid to hide his disappointment having not been selected for the qualifiers in recent times. And he has once again reinstated his point that, “my goal is 2010, and I know that I have what it takes to be apart of the Azzurri.”
At the completion of the awards ceremony, Del Piero was questioned about his chances of winning the Ballon D’Or in 2009.
“It depends how we perform in the Champions League,” he said.
“That is something we cannot rule out though, as we must think big at Juventus, and aspire to win everything,” he concluded.
Juve travel to Bergamo to face Atalanta this weekend, in a contest that they can ill afford to lose, if they wish to maintain the pace set by Inter.
