Racing Club Step Up Chase For Ajax's Dario Cvitanich - Report

Racing Club appear to have gained the upper hand in the summer race to sign Dario Cvitanich, as an investment group linked to the Argentine club make a formal bid to Ajax to take the player back to Buenos Aires.

Cvitanich, 26, spent the last season on loan at Pachuca but has repeatedly stated his desire for a return to Argentina; and the forward has been the subject of interest from several clubs in the last few weeks, including Boca Juniors and San Lorenzo. Ole reports however that it is La Academia who now lead the race for the player, and the same investment group who brought Giovanni Moreno to Avellaneda have tabled a $3.5million bid which will tempt the Dutch giants.

The bid is still less than the figure Ajax would like to receive for the talented forward, whom they signed in 2008 for around $10m from Banfield. The investors have made known that in the case of a rejection they would be prepared to up the stakes by another $500,000, but that still leaves them short of the proposal previously accepted from Mexican club Pachuca; that move fell through due to 'Cvita's reluctance to stay in the North American country. Cvitanich is currently in the Netherlands trying to convince his club to release him back to Argentina.
