Lanus Remain Top After Crushing Independiente

El Granate consolidated their position at the top of the Argentine Clausura Championship after putting five past the Rey de Copas...
Jose Sand scored four times as Lanus crushed Independiente 5-1, a result which keeps the southern Buenos Aires outfit in first place of the league standings after eight rounds.

Diego Valeri put Lanus ahead early on, but Federico Mancuello drew the visitors level minutes later. However, Sand gave Lanus the lead for the second time late in the first half, and he added three more goals in the last 11 minutes of the game.

When it seemed that a spectacular second-half volley from Juan Cuevas would give Gimnasia de La Plata a rare derby victory over Estudiantes, Christian Prette rescued the visitors a dramatic point late into second half injury-time.

At the Bombonera, Boca Juniors were held to a frustrating 1-1 draw by Godoy Cruz of Mendoza. Nicolas Gaitan had given Boca the lead in the first half, but Leandro Caruso earned his side a well-deserved point with half an hour left to play in the second.

After such a disappointing result, Boca are almost out of the title race, and are now likely to focus all their attention on winning the Copa Libertadores for what would be a record seventh time.

In Sunday's final match, Rosario Central picked up a 1-0 victory over San Martin in Tucuman, after an own goal from Jorge Anchen. Reinaldo Merlo's side claimed an important win that sees them move up to eighth place.

Velez Sarsfield climbed to third on Saturday, after edging Banfield 2-1 in Liniers. Hernan Lopez and Maximiliano Moralez scored for Velez, while Nicolas Bertolo found the back of the net for Banfield.

The Buenos Aires derby between Racing Club and River Plate ended in a 1-0 victory for the side from Avellaneda. Their winner was scored by Pablo Luguercio early in the first half.

Meanwhile, Gimnasia y Egrima de Jujuy and Tigre drew 1-1, and so did Newell's Old Boys and Argentinos Juniors.

On Friday night, Colon de Santa Fe held on to second spot after beating Huracan 1-0, while Arsenal de Sarandi and San Lorenzo fought out a 1-1 draw.
