A Palmeiras supporter was shot dead in Sao Paulo hours before the Paulista Championship match against rivals Corinthians at the weekend.

Palmeiras fans were reportedly ambushed by a group of organised Corinthians supporters in the north of the city, leaving one dead and several injured.

Twenty-one-year-old Andre Alves was killed after he was shot in the head in a confrontation that involved around 500 individuals, GloboEsporte reports.

Fans fought with a variety of weaponry and the police were forced to use tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse the crowd.

Alves was taken to the Cachoeirinha Hospital having suffered a loss of brain mass and was confirmed dead in the evening by the Secretary of the Health Department.

Corinthians won the game 2-1 and though there were reports of minor violence inside the stadium, there were no more injuries.
