The 35-year-old's absence has come as a blow for the Joel Santana's struggling side, while Pablo, Vitor and Roger also missed training today.

Struggling Cruzeiro will be without Gilberto for around ten days. The 35-year-old left-back or midfielder, who won 35 Brazil caps between 2003 and 2010, has sustained an injury to his left calf.

Gilberto is expected to miss the Campeonato Brasileiro game at home to Coritiba on Saturday and the trip to Vasco da Gama the following Wednesday, but should be fit for their next outing against Gremio on July 6.

In the former Inter, Hertha Berlin and Tottenham Hotspur man's absence in training today, Cruzeiro coach Joel Santana deployed 21-year-old Diego Renan at left-back. Right-backs Pablo and Vitor, plus playmaker Roger, also missed the practice session through injury.

Gilberto recently rejected move to Botafogo, which he had coveted to be closer to his Rio de Janeiro-based daughters, to stay in Belo Horizonte, citing his gratitude to Cruzeiro president Zeze Perrella as the reason behind his decision.

Cruzeiro, one of the pre-season title favourites, have made a very poor start to the Campeonato Brasileiro, drawing three and losing two of their opening five matches. They are current third bottom.

Santana, the former South Africa coach, recently replaced Cuca in the club's hot-seat.
