Volkan Suspended For Two Games, Turkey Fined

UEFA have announced that Turkey goalkeeper Volkan Demirel has earned a two-match suspension that will see him miss his side's Euro 2008 quarter-final clash...
Volkan will sit out the meeting with Croatia next Friday after UEFA's disciplinary committee handed him a two-game ban for shoving Jan Koller off the ball late on during his side's meeting with the Czech Republic.

The goalkeeper's indiscipline almost cost his side, given that they had already used all three of their substitutes and thus had to complete the remaining couple of minutes of the match with an outfield player in goal.

Now Volkan will miss the quarter-final and, assuming success, also the semi-final meeting with either Germany or Portugal.

Rüştü Reçber, 35, is likely to take over in goal for the Croatian encounter.

Meanwhile UEFA also slapped Turkey with a CHF 44,000 (€27,190) fine for "the improper conduct of its supporters, players and officials" during the Czech encounter.
