Everton's Phil Jagielka Will Marshal The England Back Line Against Switzerland - Fabio Capello

Italian pondering over who will partner the centre-half in Basel...
England manager Fabio Capello insists that Phil Jagielka will be the cornerstone on which the Three Lions' defence will be built in the upcoming game against Switzerland.

Steven Gerrard and co. will lock horns with a Swiss side that beat Spain during the World Cup, as both teams look towards progression in the path that leads to qualification for the Euro 2012.

The former Real Madrid boss has had to deal with the absences of both his first choice centre-halves, as Rio Ferdinand and John Terry have been sidelined with injuries. But the Everton defender stepped up to the plate on Friday, ensuring the national team kept a clean sheet against Bulgaria.

The Italian confirmed that the 28-year-old will start the game in Basel, and paid a compliment to the defender's performance in the last game.

"For the last game I chose players who I monitored in the Premier League," Capello said, as quoted by the Liverpool Daily Post.

"Now we have to choose one the player who will play alongside Jagielka."

Michael Dawson's injury against Bulgaria has ruled him out of contention for the encounter against Switzerland, amid suggestions that his replacement on the night Gary Cahill could be poised to make his first competitive start for England.

West Ham United's Matthew Upson is also available for selection.
