According to a report in De Telegraaf, reigning Greek champions Panathinaikos are considering making a move for Dutch international Stijn Schaars, currently under contract with Eredivisie outfit AZ.
The Athens giants are looking to add to their ranks in the winter transfer window and head coach Jesualdo Ferreira has made the capture of a holding midfielder his top priority.
The former Porto and Malaga gaffer supposedly sees the 26-year-old Schaars as the perfect addition to his midfield.
Schaars started his professional career with Vitesse, but left the Arnhem side for AZ in the summer of 2005. He has since made over 100 Eredivisie appearances for the Alkmaar side and played a major role in AZ's Eredivisie title in 2008-09.
The Dutch international's current contract with AZ runs until the summer of 2012, but Schaars recently expressed his desire to move on if the opportunity comes up. An offer in the region of €2.5 million could be enough to lure him away from AZ.
