Ron Vlaar Named New Feyenoord Captain

Eredivisie giants Feyenoord have named highly rated centre-back Ron Vlaar as the club's new skipper for the 2010-11 campaign. Young midfielder Leroy Fer has been appointed as back-up captain.

The Rotterdam side needed a new skipper and vice-captain following the retirement of both Giovanni van Bronckhorst and Roy Makaay earlier this summer.

"I feel like it's important for these two guys to get some extra responsibility. Both players are really great guys and they will play a big role in Feyenoord's future," head coach Mario Been was quoted as saying by NUsport

"I am confident that Ron will make it into the Dutch national side again within the next two years. Leroy on the other hand could be the next Mark van Bommel in the near future. This will only be extra motivation for them."

Vlaar joined Feyenoord from AZ in January of 2006 and initially failed to make an impact due to a string of knee injuries. However, he became a key player last term and even returned to Oranje.

Fer is a product of the Feyenoord youth academy and has already been capped at the Under-21 level for Holland.
