Reigning Austrian champions Red Bull Salzburg have confirmed the transfer of holding midfielder David Mendes da Silva from Eredivisie outfit AZ for an undisclosed fee. The Dutch international has signed a three-year deal with his new club.
Salzburg coach Huub Stevens is eager to strenghten his squad ahead of the 2010-11 campaign in order to reach the group phase of the Champions League and Mendes da Silva was one of his primary targets on the transfer market.
Mendes da Silva joined AZ from NAC in the summer of 2006 and had since made 109 Eredivisie appearances for the Alkmaar side, scoring nine goals in the process. The 26-year-old has previously worn the jerseys of Sparta and Ajax.
The seven-times capped Dutch international recently revealed that he wanted a new challenge and expressed his delight with the transfer.
"I admit that the Austrian league is not very well known, but I'm very happy with this transfer. Red Bull are the reigning champions and play Champions League football next term. I'm looking forward to a new challenge, "said Mendes da Silva to Voetbal International.
