Expectations were sky-high at the Amsterdam ArenA when young midfielder Jeffrey Sarpong made his official Ajax debut in 2005-06. However, the versatile midfielder has failed to secure regular first team football ever since and has made only 20 league appearances for the Amsterdam side so far.
The 21-year-old has yet to make his first league appearance for Ajax this term, but Sarpong is full of confidence that he is on the right track after a number of strong performances with the reserves.
"I feel like I am too good to play with reserves and I've had this feeling for a while now. I am doing my utmost at the reserves and we'll have to wait and see what happens during the winter break," Sarpong said to RTV Noord-Holland.
"I've already discussed my future with head coach Martin Jol and he has also noticed that I've made a lot of progress. I feel like I am really close to returning to the first team again and I can hardly wait."
Sarpong was linked with a move away from the Amsterdam giants last summer, but he eventually opted to stay at Ajax in order to fight for a place in the first team.
