UEFA Under-19 Championship Preview: Spain - Italy

The Italians need to win to progress from Group B...
Kick-Off: Saturday, July 24, 2010, 16:00 CET.
Stade du Haze, Flers, France.

All Done And Dusted

Spain have been very impressive in the U-19 Championships so far and are the only side among the eight teams to have already qualified for the semfinals. A 2-1 win against Croatia in their opening game of the competition was followed by a similar result against Iberian rivals Portugal.

Two wins out of two matches imply that Spain have already qualified for the semifinals of the competition as Group B winners, an accomplishment that striker Dani Pacheco is proud of. However, the 19-year-old wants to carry on with the winning momentum.

He told Uefa.com, "What we want to do is rest well and then concentrate on that last game against Italy. Our two main objectives going into these finals were to progress to the semi-finals and to qualify for the FIFA U-20 World Cup next summer, which we have now achieved."

Out Of Their Hands

Like their senior team at the 2010 World Cup finals in South Africa, the U-19 Italy side at the European Championships are staring at elimination from the group stage. At the moment the Azzurrini have just a single point from two matches.

Italy went down 2-0 to Portugal in their opening game at the competition and then could only draw 0-0 with Croatia in their second match. This means that should Portugal win their final match against Croatia on Saturday, then the result of this match will be academic for Italy.

However, Italy striker Mattia Destro is confident that things will turn out for the better for them. He said, "I've always had an excellent understanding with Fabio Borini. We know each other very well as we've been in the same team since U-16 level, and we're friends as well as team-mates.

"It will be very hard for us, but we absolutely have to beat Spain and let's hope we can progress."
