Italy's Serie A may be lagging behind fellow top European leagues, with the Bundesliga and Premier League already well underway, but the campaign began in exciting fashion last night with one of the finest goals of the season.
The match between Udinese and Genoa appeared to be heading for a 0-0 draw until Giandomenico Mesto popped up with a fantastic overhead kick to win the game for the Rossoblu.
The 28-year-old midfielder is not known for scoring, he claimed five goals in 42 appearances last season and none in 27 matches in 2008-09. It is also unlikely that Mesto has scored a better goal in his career. Mesto said after the game: "It was tough out there and perhaps my goal was lucky, but it decided the game."
Mesto's excellent overhead kick against Udinese is on the video below.
For comparison, the opening goal of the Spanish La Liga season was a trademark header from one of Spain's World Cup winning squad members, Fernando Llorente to secure Athletic Bilbao's 1-0 win at Hercules.
Brazil's Serie A also provided a couple of excellent goals yesterday. Ze Roberto's howitzer put Vasco ahead at home to Cruzeiro and Ze Eduardo's acrobatic volley put Santos one-up in their win over Goias.
