Sunderland - West Brom Betting Preview: Back Baggies to edge low-scoring game

Martin O'Neill's men picked up a long-awaited win againt 10-man Fulham but Adam Bate expects Steve Clarke's in-form team to prove a trickier proposition
Sunderland supporters might feel their side turned a corner against Fulham in front of the television cameras on Sunday afternoon.

The Cottagers only had 10 men but the Black Cats still needed to score and that’s been proving rather tricky for Martin O’Neill’s men this season.

But score they did, picking up their first away win of the campaign and finally finding some fluency – netting three goals in 20 minutes after managing just five in the previous 12 hours of football.

Sunderland are 7/5 (2.40) with Bet365 to build on that success with another three points at home to West Brom at the weekend.

Not that this is a good time to playing a buoyant Baggies. Steve Clarke’s side have won three on the bounce to move into the Champions League positions.

A win at the Stadium of Light would, albeit potentially briefly, take them to within two points of leaders Manchester City.

And yet, West Brom are still 2/1 (3.00) underdogs with Bet365 to claim the victory.

The draw is available at 23/10 (3.30) and that’s worthy of consideration given that Sunderland have drawn six of their 11 Premier League games so far this season.

But for the best bet here, the more telling statistic is the goals that the fans have seen at the Stadium of Light – or rather the lack of them.

O’Neill demands his two rigid banks of four and that discipline has contributed to all six Sunderland home games this season featuring under 2.5 goals.

West Brom’s counter-attacking style away from home is unlikely to break that trend so the price of 9/10 (1.90) with Bet365 looks very tempting and is the pick of the bets for this game.

For the value option, there are good prices for an Albion win despite their excellent form and in a potentially low-scoring game that opens up possibilities.

Both of Sunderland’s home defeats this season have been by the same 1-0 margin and yet that scoreline is available at a chunky – and industry-best – 9/1 (10.00) with Bet365.
