Welcome to Goal.com's regular feature: Goal.com World Player of the Week. Each week our worldwide team of editors will put forward a selected candidate, as chosen by Goal.com International, who deserves recognition for achieving something special that matchday. It won't necessarily be the best player in the world - at least not usually - but whoever we nominate will have done something amazing. It might be for a particularly awesome performance or for something praiseworthy off the pitch - either way, the person in question deserves special attention...
Goal.com World Player of the Week #98: Alexandre Pato (Castrol Ranking: 771)
Achievement: Scored twice against Inter in the Milan derby
Alexandre Pato scored two goals for Milan against Inter in the Derby della Madoninna on Saturday evening to secure a comprehensive 3-0 victory. The performance of the Brazil international striker was laudable not just for the goals but also for the way he put the Nerazzurri defence into sixes and sevens with his runs and movements.
Pato opened the scoring for the Rossoneri as early as the first minute and added his second just after the hour-mark. Neither of the goals was exceptional but both attested that Pato has positional sense and knows to be at the right place at the right time.
Pato offered the victory to the club’s supporters and stated: “I dedicate my brace to the fans who have always been here at the stadium to support us, even in the past few years, when things were not going so well.”
The 3-0 win means that Milan have accomplished the double over their arch-rivals this season as they defeated Inter 1-0 in the reverse fixture at San Siro in November.
Congratulations to Alexandre Pato, Goal.com's 98th world player of the week!
Edinson Cavani – Napoli (Castrol Ranking: 76)
Edinson Cavani scored three more goals for Napoli, this time against Lazio on Sunday afternoon. The Uruguay international now has 25 in Serie A this campaign and can lay claim to be the league’s best striker – ahead of Milan ace Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
Wayne Rooney – Manchester United (Castrol Ranking: 24)
Manchester United staged a sensational 4-2 comeback victory over West Ham United in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon and at the heart of the win was Wayne Rooney’s 14-minute hat-trick. The England international striker struggled to make any impact in the first half but turned on the style in the second session and catapulted the Red Devils towards the title.
Juan Pablo – Sporting Gijon (Castrol Ranking: 279)
Sporting Gijon shocked the Bernabeu as they defeated Real Madrid 1-0 in the Spanish Primera Division on Saturday evening. But the scoreline could have been different if not for Sporting goalkeeper Juan Pablo. He was not under much pressure in the first half but was forced into making a series of saves in the second session, especially late on when the Blancos came at his goal in droves.
Theo Janssen – Twente (Castrol Ranking: N/A)
Theo Janssen scored both the goals in Dutch champions Twente’s 2-0 victory over PSV in the Eredivisie. His brilliant performance saw Twente gain control of pole position.
Al Hasan Kita - Al Shabab Club (Castrol Ranking: N/A)
Al Hasan Kita of Al Shabab Club scored a hat-trick against Al Hazem in the Saudi league.
Hulk – Porto (Castrol Ranking: N/A)
Porto secured the Portuguese league title on Sunday evening by defeating Benfica 2-1 and, fittingly enough, Hulk scored the winning goal from the penalty spot.
