Switzerland coach Ottmar Hitzfeld has revealed his delight following his side’s shock 1-0 victory over World Cup favourites Spain today.

'I am very proud of my players,” Hitzfeld said to reporters after the game. “I believe my team achieved something historic today because Switzerland had not beaten Spain in I think 105 years.”

“It is a historic victory,” he added. “We had to rely on counter-attacks but we did so very intelligently.”

Switzerland spent much of the game on the back foot but took a second-half lead through Gelson Fernandes and went on to win the game with a resolute defensive performance.

"We haven't beaten Spain for such a long time,” the coach continued.

"We have taken a step towards the second round, but now more will be expected of us. We have to remain attentive and focused."
