Following his side’s crushing 4-0 defeat to Germany this evening, Australia coach Pim Verbeek admitted his side are left facing two must win matches against Serbia and Ghana.
“The moment you lose this game, you have two finals,” Verbeek told SBS TV. “We know what we have to do, beat Serbia and Ghana. It is that simple.”
Australia were dealt a major blow when Lucas Podolski fired Germany into the lead after just eight minutes before their task was made all the more difficult when Tim Cahill was dismissed on the hour mark.
“The last thing you want is a goal after ten minutes - that was not the plan, of course. We took some time to get over that,” added Verbeek before admitting he didn’t get a good view of the incident that saw Cahill dismissed.
“I couldn’t see it,” he said. “I was looking somewhere else but it didn’t help us."
