World Cup 2010: Ottmar Hitzfeld Confirms Alex Frei Will Miss Spain Opener; Confident Of Return Against Chile

Press conference reveals Frei Might make Chile clash...
Switzerland coach Ottmar Hitzfeld has conceded that captain Alexander Frei is likely to miss his side’s World Cup opener with Spain next week, but revealed he is hoping the striker will be fit for their second match with Chile 21 June.

"The most probable outcome is that he won't recover in time for the first game against Spain, Hitzfeld told a press conference this today, "but we hope we can count with him against Chile in our second match.”

Swiss media reports had suggested that Frei would miss the entire tournament after  injuring his right ankle in training just hours before the squad leaves for South Africa.

The FC Basel forward was tackled by defender Steve von Bergen in training and had to be treated before limping off at Zurich's Letzigrund stadium.

30 year old Frei has 40 goals in 73 appearances for his country and ironically also missed most of EURO 2008 through injury.
