Pellegrini: Aguero is the best, it's strange he never wins POTY

Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini says it is "strange" that Sergio Aguerohas never been named Footballer of the Year during his time in England.

Aguero has been overlooked for both the Professional Footballers' Association and Football Writers' Association award in each of his four full seasons with City, and looks set to miss out again this year.

The Argentine has never even been named in the PFA's team of the year, despite playing a key role in City's two successful title bids and scooping the Premier League golden boot award last season.

And after the striker scored a clinical hat-trick to seal a 3-0 victory against Chelsea on Saturday, his manager expressed his surprise at the apparent blindspot.

"Sergio Aguero? I am sure he is the best striker in this league," he told reporters.

“It’s strange that Aguero has never been the best player in the Premier League in all his years here.

“I think here in the Premier League that Kun is one of the best, if not the best.”

Aguero has now scored 21 league goals this season, level with Leicester City's Jamie Vardy and Tottenham's Harry Kane, who have both been nominated for the PFA Player of the Year award.

Meanwhile, Pellegrini confirmed that Samir Nasri will miss Tuesday's game at Newcastle United with a muscle injury.

The Frenchman returned from a six-month injury lay-off as a substitute against Bournemouth a fortnight ago, before scoring the winning goal against West Brom on his first start.

But he was withdrawn during the second half at Stamford Bridge and will not be risked in the north east, where Gael Clichy will also miss out.
