Financial worries could force PSV to cash in on Balazs Dzsudzsak & Ola Toivonen

The Eindhoven side are eager to add to their ranks this summer, but are plagued by financial problems and lack the resources in the transfer market

Having won seven out of 12 Eredivisie titles in the 21st century, there is no denying that PSV have been the dominant force in The Netherlands in recent times. Nevertheless, the Eindhoven side have been unable to live up to their reputation in the past few seasons, as their last league triumph dates back to 2008. It is clear that something needs to be done at the Philips Stadium.

The club's technical staff have come to the same conclusion, and PSV are eager to add to their ranks in the summer transfer window. They have been linked with Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes, AZ midfielder Stijn Schaars, Feyenoord youngster Georginio Wijnaldum and Heerenveen winger Oussama Assaidi. There appears to be one big problem, however; a lack of funds.

The Dutch giants are on an annual budget of €64 million, but income from the Champions League is taken into account in this figure. Their failure to qualify for Europe's elite tournament in 2009, 2010 and 2011 cost them an estimated €20m per year, meaning that PSV find themselves in serious financial difficulty.

The club recently presented a plan to get their financial situation back on track and received assistance from the municipality of Eindhoven and main sponsor, Philips. The local government decided to purchase the ground under the club's stadium for a fee of €48.4m. PSV obtained the right to continue to use the ground and are consequently obligated to pay an annual fee of €2.5m over the next 20 years. Philips, on the other hand, granted a €20m loan to help boost equity. Additionally, several measures were taken to cut expenses and increase income on a structural basis.

The fans are hopeful that the financial injection will be of help in the transfer market, but general director Tiny Sanders has already made it clear that this is not the case. The chief revealed that recent events will not have any influence on the club's transfer budget, meaning that PSV will have to search for another solution to finance their planned squad overhaul this summer.

Balazs Dzsudzsak

Age: 24
Position: Winger
Potential Fee: €12m
Ola Toivonen

Age: 24
Position: Forward
Potential fee: €8m
Orlando Engelaar

Age: 31
Position: Midfielder
Potential fee: €2m

The club has already revealed their intention to offload players such as Andreas Isaksson and Orlando Engelaar, but it is unlikely that the aforementioned duo will leave PSV for a noteworthy fee. Therefore, the Eindhoven side could be forced to make the delicate decision to cash in on their star players, as well.

Hungary international Balazs Dzsudzsak is the club's undisputed key man and the winger has recently been linked with teams such as Liverpool, Juventus, Lille and Anzhi Makhachkala. The former Debreceni talent is eager to move on after a strong season, and his departure seems like a realistic option.

Another player who could be on his way out is forward Ola Toivonen. The Swedish hitman was close to a move to Liverpool in 2010 and a number of Bundesliga and Premier League sides are now coveting the attacker's services. PSV have yet to receive an official offer, but they are expected to jump at the opportunity to sell if their valuation is met.

A fee in the region of €12m will probably be enough for an interested party to land Dzsudzsak,  while €8m could see Toivonen move on. Additionally, the sale of Isaksson and Engelaar will likely generate a total transfer income of over €20m.

This results in a healthy transfer kitty that could be enough for to lure Gomes (contract until 2012, estimated transfer fee €5m), Schaars (2012, €2m), Wijnaldum (2012, €5m) and Assaidi (2013, €5m) to Eindhoven, assuming they have the financial resources to meet the aforementioned players' personal demands. Four players PSV fans hope will be able to replace the loss of European stars such as Dzsudzsak and Toivonen.
