Player Ratings: Fiorentina 3-2 Bayern Munich (Agg: 4-4)

Frey: 7 – Produced one great fingertip save from Robben in the first half, but even he couldn’t do anything about the Dutchman’s wonderful goal. Made other important saves late on to leave Fiorentina in with a chance until the death.

De Silvestri: 6 – Had one of his less adventurous games as the Viola spent long spells worrying about the twin threat of Ribery and Robben, but did a reasonable defensive job on the Frenchman.

Natali: 6 – Stood firm at the back for the most part, but lost Klose on a couple of occasions when goals could easily have resulted.

Kroldrup: 7.5 – A surprise hero at the back. Was having his best performance in a Fiorentina shirt, maybe any shirt, until the Viola grabbed their two-goal lead and twice fell asleep. But he continued to excel, making another great challenge on Robben late on.

Felipe: 6 – Committed an early foul on Robben which could have put him on a caution, but was left free of such a burden to do ok in an unfamiliar role and can’t really be held responsible for Robben’s wonder goal. Was replaced in the closing stages after eventually seeing yellow.

Montolivo: 7 – Produced an excellent first half display, full of great cover and excellent first time passes, but faded in the second when the battle got heated.

Zanetti: 7 – Worked doubly hard in the middle as the Viola looked to stay on top, but ultimately couldn’t help to stop the flow of passes to Robben and Ribery.

Marchionni: 6.5 – Delivered some telling passes from the right hand side, including a low ball across which led to Jovetic’s first, but didn’t always find it easy up against Alaba.

Jovetic: 8 – Pulled his side up by the boot straps with two superb finishes in the second half when he could easily have cracked. His goals mirrored his general play as he produced a performance of great maturity throughout. Deserved to be a quarter-finalist on this display.

Vargas: 7 –Produced a cracking finish to give the Viola the lead, and it wasn’t the first time he’d caused the Germans problems down the left. His effectiveness wasn’t as high in the second half, but he was always a danger.

Gilardino: 6.5 – Still not at his predatory best, but his movement close to goal kept Bayern’s defence honest throughout. Should have given the Viola a 2-0 lead soon after the break from Badstuber’s error, but made up for it with a clever backheel to tee up Jovetic for his first and then a flick-on for the Montenegrin's second.

Pasqual: NA – Replaced Felipe late on as the Viola looked to get more players into crossing positions.

Keirrison: NA – A late entry to the pitch as Cesare Prandelli looked for a flash of inspiration to send Fiorentina through.

Butt: 5 –His amateurish spill straight to Vargas set up the opening goal for Fiorentina and his night didn’t get any better despite his team’s eventual progression. Never got a reign on the traffic rushing past his goalmouth and could easily have been made to pay late on.

Lahm: 5.5 - Not as trustworthy defensively as he is on the attack, and he failed to track Vargas or Jovetic at times when they drifted into dangerous positions.

Van Buyten: 5.5 – Some will claim he was lucky to get away with a handball shout in the opening stages, and was also culpable on at least one of Fiorentina’s goals. He’s enjoyed far better European nights than this one.

Badstuber: 5.5 – Looked unsure early on and later made a grave error which should have resulted in Gilardino making it 2-0. Did nothing to increase his hopes of featuring in the centre of defence on a more regular basis.

Alaba: 6.5 – Clattered into Marchionni and could easily have been punished, but did well in the role, trying to get forward when possible. But he grew as the game went on and put in two or three important tackles late on as Fiorentina pushed for a winner. Bayern’s best defender on the night.

Robben: 7.5 – Scored an exceptional goal just when his team needed that flash of genius. Had been hit and miss before then, giving Frey the chance to stop a chance he should have buried in the first half. Kept Fiorentina on the back foot late on when they were still hoping to pile forward looking for a winner.

Van Bommel: 7 – Wasn’t really having the desired effect in midfield, but then produced an expert low strike to bring the tie level. Grew in confidence after that as Bayern saw out the match with little to spare.

Schweinsteiger: 6.5 – Grafted in midfield, but provided little to no real key moments when Bayern were on the ball.

Ribery: 6.5 – Though he looked to be short of match fitness still, he provided a real go-to presence for FCB, and got more involved in the second half as Bayern twice reigned back the home side.

Mueller: 6 – A very below-par performance from the youngster, who doesn’t look particularly at ease playing as one of the front men on big Champions League nights.

Gomez: 5.5 – Limped out of the game in the first half having contributed little to Bayern’s struggle to force their way clear of the home side.

Klose: 6 – An early replacement for the injured Gomez, the German international got few clear chances on goal, but gave Natali problems right through to the end.

Pranjic: NA – Was the subject of a late time-wasting substitution, replacing Ribery.
