Maccabi Haifa need to only avoid defeat in Israel in the second leg of their Champions League clash to qualify for the group stages after pulling off a close-fought 2-1 win in Austria over Salzburg.

Clinical finishing was the order of the day for the visitors, as substitute Shlomi Arbeitman provided the winning goal just six minutes from time as the hosts squandered a host of half-chances.

Maccabi's Mohammed Ghadir found the net for the Israelis after 22 minutes which diminished any home advantage the Austrians may have had and forcing Dutch boss Huub Stevens to rethink his strategy.

Veteran German striker Alexander Zickler would be the man to pull the Bulls back to level pegging with their opponents - the 35-year-old striking lucky 15 minutes after the restart.

Six substitutions and two yellow cards later, Shlomi Arbeitman, still fresh off the bench, put the visitors back in the lead.

An 84th minute strike secured a win for the Greens and brands them favourites to progress to the next stage as they boast two away goals ahead of the return leg.
