Former Arsenal striker Dennis Bergkamp appointed Ajax assistant coach

The 42-year-old has taken on the role at the Amsterdam side after having previously been in charge of the club's youth system
Former Arsenal and Inter striker Dennis Bergkamp has been appointed as Ajax's new assistant coach, and will be promoted from the post of youth team boss for the 2011-12 season.

Bergkamp, who played alongside current Ajax coach Frank de Boer, will now work closely with the ex-defender as the club look to retain their Eredivisie title next year.

The 42-year old progressed through the ranks of the Amsterdam club's youth system to make 185 appearances for the Dutch team's senior side between 1986 and 1993.

The attacker also played in Italy and England, where he enjoyed a successful spell with Arsenal, winning three Premier League titles and four FA Cups.

Bergkamp completed his coaching badges with the Dutch FA in February, alongside former colleagues Patrick Kluivert and Phillip Cocu.
