Wendel Admits That Galatasaray Were ‘Difficult’ Opponents For Bordeaux

Laurent Blanc’s Girondins de Bordeaux side continued their stuttering progress on Wednesday evening as they were held at home by Turkish giants Galatasaray, leaving left-winger Wendel under no illusions that they face up uphill struggle to qualify for the next phase.

Les Girondins started the match relatively brightly but found their opponents’ resilience in the second half too much to overcome and will have to be content travelling east next Thursday with a scoreless draw.

“The match was difficult,” Wendel explained to Football365. “During the first 20 minutes we played well and created some openings but we did so without scoring. The second half became more difficult because a defensive player began to block the wings. Now there is a difficult match to negotiate before qualifying for the 1/8 finals.”

While Europe and the UEFA Cup are undoubtedly attracting some of the squad’s attention, the Brazilian has warned his team-mates that they must continue to perform well in Ligue 1.

“We must not lower our heads and we must continue to work towards our goals,” he asserted. “We play on Sunday against Saint-Etienne on Sunday and we must return [to our best].”

Bordeaux play a Sainte side boosted by an impressive 3-1 success over Greek league leaders Olympiakos on Wednesday evening.
