Villarreal’s Borja Valero: We can win Europa League

Borja Valero is adamant that their loss to Barcelona in La Liga at the weekend will have no impact on their chances of winning against Twente...

Villarreal midfielder Borja Valero has rejected suggestions that their defeat to Barcelona at the weekend has dampened their spirit ahead of the clash with Twente.

The Yellow Submarine went down 1-0 at home to the Spanish champions in the Primera Division to continue their recent slump in form in the league.

It was not a positive warm-up for their encounter with Twente in the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final tie on Thursday evening, but midfielder Valero insists that they have put the weekend’s disappointment behind them.

"We are coming into the match in a positive frame of mind," Valero said in press conference. "Although we lost to Barca we gave a good account of ourselves and we could even have equalised near the end.

"We'll try to continue in the same vein in the Europa League to get a good result and we are convinced we can win the competition."

The 2005-06 Champions League semi-finalists got the better of Bayer Leverkusen and Napoli in the last two rounds, and Valero believes that victories over big sides have enhanced their confidence.

“We have already knocked out important teams and we have no other choice but to go for it now," enthused the 26-year-old. "We have to fight to the death in each game if we want to achieve our goal."

Thursday’s game between Villarreal and Twente will be the first time that the two sides will face each other in European club competition.
