Nigel de Jong has insisted that Manchester City are looking to win the Europa League this season and are not just in the competition to make up the numbers.
City begin their group stage campaign away at Red Bull Salzburg this evening and De Jong maintains that the competition is being taken very seriously indeed by Roberto Mancini's side, who are desperate to win some silverware.
"We expect to win something this season. Being the first one for so long, it doesn't really matter which it is," he told reporters.
"Once we have got the first, I expect a few to quickly follow. We are in four competitions and we could win any of them.
"Our long-term project is to win the league but if you look at the players we've signed, they all have the winning mentality."
Spanish forward David Silva could be handed a start in the game in Austria after a somewhat understated start to his career at City.
De jong is confident that the winger will answer the doubters and go on to excel at Eastlands.
"I've seen quite a lot of him over the years and we are very excited to have him," he added.
"David reads a game very well, he has a terrific left foot and is very skilful."
