Benni McCarthy urges South Africa strikers to break his record

The former Blackburn Rovers striker currently holds the top-scorer record for South Africa, but he wants Katlego Mphela to surpass that mark
Benni McCarthy has urged the South Africa strikers to break his record of being the national team's all-time leading goal scorer.

The Orlando Pirates marksman is still at the pinnacle of Bafana top scorers list with 31 goals in 79 appearances and he says for someone who's been off the international scene for some time now; he should be "taken off" first spot in terms of the leaders in goals scored for Bafana Bafana.

"I hope Mphela catches me, because I don't wanna be retired and still say Benni is still Bafana Bafana's top scorer of all time," McCarthy told

McCarthy's 31 strikes are rivaled only by the retired Shaun Bartlett, who walked off the international scene with 29 goals to his name while the third highest scorer is Katlego Mphela on 21 goals, followed by Phil Masinga (18) and Siyabonga Nomvete (16).

McCarthy continued, "We must have playing top scores, not no more playing top scorers. It wasn't right when Shaun (Bartlett) was top scorer when he was not playing anymore so I had to go take him off.

"So now it is my turn to be taken off and Mphela must say, 'Hey, these guys are finished and I must take them off'. It will be great when people say Bafana's top scorer is Mphela and he is still playing, that's how it should be. Sammy Eto'o is top scorer for Cameroon and he is still playing… Drogba the same for Ivory Coast," McCarthy argued.

However, McCarthy is not in two minds over Mphela's goal scoring prowess saying the Mamelodi Sundowns man's future should be abroad.

"He's got all the attributes to play for an overseas team," McCarthy added.
