Ajax Cape Town's Thulani Serero & Orlando Pirates dominate PSL awards

The former Urban Warriors striker is on his way to Ajax Amsterdam in the new season, after cleaning up at the PSL awards
It was a night of surprises as the PSL Annual Awards were handed out at the Lyric Theatre at Gold Reef City last night.

At the beginning of the night it looked as though Orlando Pirates were going to make a clean sweep – down to the music selection, which was very Pirates of the Caribbean – but then events took a turn, as the Ajax Amsterdam-bound Thulani Serero won four of the five awards he was up for.

Serero won Absa Premiership Player of the Season, Absa Premiership Players' Player of the Season, Absa Premiership Red-hot Young Player of the Season and PSL Footballer of the Year. He lost out to Tlou Segolela for the Absa-lutely Awesome Goal Award.

This surprised many fans, who thought Andile Jali was certain to clean up.

Of the six awards he was nominated for, the Pirates star picked up just one: the Nedbank Cup Young Player of the Tournament.

Kaizer Chiefs striker Knowledge Musona won the Premiership Top Goalscorer and Telkom Knockout Player of the Tournament Awards, but he is away on national team duty with Zimbabwe. His awards were collected by club marketing manager Jessica Motaung.

Interestingly, the 21-year-old Jali won the main award for the Nedbank Cup, while the 23-year-old Segolela walked away with the Nedbank Cup Young Player of the Tournament.

Serero walked away with R700 000 in prize money, which is the most any player has won at the PSL Awards – ever.
