Udinese Ready To Sign Ghanaian Jonathan Mensah From Free State Stars

Another star of Ghana's Under-20 World Cup winning side is primed to move to Italy...
Young Ghanaian defender Jonathan Mensah has all-but sealed a deal to join Italian side Udinese from Free State Stars of South Africa.

The calm but forceful central defender will leave before the end of the week for his medical in Europe and hopes to return when the transfer window opens in January.

“Everything has been finalised by my agency, Prosport International,” Mensah, who pillared the defence of Ghana’s Under-20 side at the World Cup in Egypt, told KickOff.com.

“I will still be with Stars for the next three days before going for my medical at Udinese.”

Mensah added, “It’s always been my dream to play in Europe and I am very happy that finally I am close in achieving it. I would like to thank Mike Mokoena for agreeing to let me go, despite me still having two years left on my contract.”

The 19-year-old hopes to join senior countryman Kwadwo Asamoah at Udinese if the deal is finalised. French club Bordeaux were close to signing him, but Udinese made a bigger offer.

Mensah, who helped the Black Satellites to win the U-20 world title in Egypt last month, is undoubtedly a good choice for the Bianconeri due to his smart turning and speed.

“I always want to compare him to John Mensah, his senior colleague defender with the Black Stars. It is about time he replaced John because he is fresh and brilliant,” Kofi Agyapong, a sports journalist with The Mail told Goal.com.

“Jonathan marks well and he’s always there to make a difference in the defence. Udinese should consider giving him a chance in the starting line-up because he is a player full of surprises. He has very good turning and with time he will build up speed.

“I personally think he has the ability to play at that level and will definitely stand the test of time, like other Ghanaian players have shown in Italy and Europe as a whole."

Goal poacher Dominic Adiyiah, a team-mate in the U-20 side, signed recently for Milan.

His transfer will add to six Black Stars players – captain Stephen Appiah (Bologna), Mohammed Rabiu (Sampdoria), Kwadwo Asamoah (Udinese), Sulley Muntari (Inter Milan) and Adiyiah - playing in Serie A.
