Romania have been held to a hard fought 1-1 draw by Austria, in a crucial Group 7 World Cup qualifier, which has all but ended their hopes of playing in South Africa in 2010.

Following an uninspiring scoreless first half, the match burst into life in the second, when after just 11 minutes, Gheorghe Bucur grabbed the opening goal of the contest.

Despite a number of opportunities to pull one back in the next 20 minutes or so, the visitors seemed unable to beat Danut Coman in goal, making it look likely that a 1-0 would be the outcome on the night.

On 82 minutes though, Austrian defender, Franz Schiemer, popped up to head in the equalising goal, meaning that it eventually ended all square at 1-1 after the allotted 90 minutes of play.

T
he result sees the hosts remain in fifth place, with just nine points to their name. They will be sweating on the result of the Serbia-France clash, as if Les Bleus clinch victory, their hopes of qualifying for the World Cup will be officially over.

Meanwhile, Austria are two points clear of the Romanians in third, and are still in with a shot at finishing in second place, which means their hopes of qualification are still well and truly alive.
