Bayer Leverkusen's Michael Ballack suffers broken nose in 1-0 win over Freiburg

The veteran midfielder scored the only goal of the game for Robin Dutt's side, but is now a doubt for the Bundesliga team's Champions League tie against Valencia on Tuesday
Bayer Leverkusen have received a blow ahead of their Champions League fixture with Valencia on Tuesday, as Michael Ballack is a major doubt due to a broken nose.

The veteran midfielder scored the only goal of the game in the BayArena side's 1-0 away win over Freiburg on Friday night, but was replaced on the 65th minute mark after picking up the injury.

The official Leverkusen website confirmed that that the ex-Chelsea man's nose is broken, and that he did not return to the Leverkusen team hotel in Freiburg until 1.30CET on Saturday morning.

The former Germany captain's involvement at the Mestalla against Unai Emery's side is now in the balance, and it is believed that the Gorlitz-born midfielder will be assessed close to kick-off with a view to his participation.

Leverkusen's win on Friday night moved them up to eighth in the Bundesliga, and they will now focus their efforts on Europe.

The German side beat Valencia 2-1 in the corresponding fixture at home, and currently sit in second place in Group E, four points ahead of their Spanish opponents in third.
