The midfielder had been struggling with a muscle complaint in the run-up to the game, and had not trained for two days. He had high hopes of being included, but Magath confirmed he was not picked for the squad, and he walked out of the pre-match meeting.
"Diego had gone two days without training, and the chance to shine is falling to [Thomas] Kahlenberg. It is true, Diego left the meeting after he saw he was not in the team today," the trainer stated to reporters shortly before kick-off, while also letting slip his annoyance with the temperamental playmaker.
"Diego has demonstrated with his behaviour just how much he wants to be in the team," he fired.
Wolfsburg are currently just one point ahead of Eintracht Frankfurt in the relegation fight, and need a win away to Hoffenheim to ensure their continuity in the top division.
