Schalke and Borussia Dortmund could each be short a central defender on Friday as the local rivals face off in the Ruhr derby. The official BVB website revealed on Wednesday that Felipe Santana's fitness is in question due to a case of the common cold. Additionally, Schalke announced that Christoph Metzelder is a question mark due to a sinus infection.
Santana, 24, was already penciled in to deputise for regular starter Neven Subotic, who is suspended due to accumulated yellow cards. The Brazilian should be fit to play after saying: "I'm already feeling better."
Should Santana be unfit to play, Dortmund may have to use 20-year-old Lasse Sobeich in central defence. Marc Hornschuh, 19, also is a potential deputy.
Schalke, meanwhile, will likely use Kyriakos Papadopoulos at the back, should Metzelder fail to recover his fitness. However, coach Felix Magath has several other options at his disposal and as of yet has not offered insight into his current defensive pecking order.
