Bundesliga giants Schalke went down 3-0 to Trabzonspor in the Antalya Cup with a lacklustre performance in the Mardan Stadium, which will not please head coach Felix Magath.
Turkish league leaders Trabzonspor took the lead on nine minutes after an error in the Schalke defence. Young left-back Nils Zander gave the ball away inside his own-half to Tayfun Cora, who found the top corner with a stunning right-footed strike beyond Manuel Neuer.
Die Knappen nearly fell further behind on 26 minutes when Trabzonspor skipper Ibrahim Yattara got in behind Zander and played a low ball across the area, which evaded not only the men in white shirts but also Umut Bulut at the far post.
Magath's men improved as the first-half drew to a close and almost nicked an equaliser. Joel Matip's pace helped keep the ball in play and he crossed to Raul, who turned inside the box but saw his weak effort diverted onto the post by goalkeeper Onur Kivrak.
The home side came out on the front foot and doubled their lead on 57 minutes as Umut Bulut was somehow allowed to ghost into the area unmarked and he latched onto the through ball to slide home past Neuer.
Despite missing an open goal earlier in the game, Burak Yilmaz got on the scoresheet after 78 minutes when he outpaced Kyriakos Papadopoulos before stroking the ball into the net. After a series of unfortunate offside calls against the striker, it was just rewards for an impressive showing.
