Stuttgart Want Flamengo Defender Welinton - Report

According to a report in Bild, beleaguered Bundesliga side Stuttgart are considering making a move for promising defender Welinton in the January transfer window. The centre-back currently plays for Brazilian outfit Flamengo.

The Schwaben have been looking vulnerable at the back in the opening months of the 2010-11 campaign and sporting director Fredi Bobic is eager to strengthen Stuttgart's back-line during the winter break.

Stuttgart were previously linked with Red Bull Salzburg youngster Martin Hinteregger, but they've now apparently turned their attention to the 21-year-old Welinton.

"Welinton is an interesting player for us and we're closely monitoring his progress. However, we're keeping tabs on several players and we haven't made a move yet for Welinton," said Bobic to Bild.

Welinton came through the ranks of the Flamengo youth academy and has become an important first team member at the Rio de Janeiro side in the past couple of months.

The centre-back's contract with Flamengo runs until 2014, but he could be available for about €1.5 million in the January transfer window.
