Experienced Schalke defender Christoph Metzelder has revealed that he's working with a sport psychologist to help him through a difficult start to life at the Gelsenkirchen side.
"My own behaviour has got out of hand. I have been thinking about everything and that has stolen my instinct and my ability to act quickly. I am working with a coach in the mental area. This has taught me how to cope better with pressure," said Metzelder to Sport Bild.
The former Real Madrid defender was seen as the main reason for Schalke's difficult start to the season by a large group of fans, much to the frustration of Metzelder.
"That was incredible. There was such hysteria about me. That was unfair. Our situation was largely put down to me by the public.
"We have now got to think about our honour. Everybody is playing below their standards and we are falling behind our expectations. We are not helping each other enough on the field.
"It frustrates me that last season, everybody fought to be able to play in the Champions League and now we are doing everything we can not to play in it next season. We have got to get ourselves out of the crisis and we can only do that with actions."
