Expectations were high at Bundesliga side Koeln when the Geissbocke announced the capture of Portuguese midfielder Maniche at the beginning of the season, but the 32-year-old has failed to live up to expectations so far.
Maniche has been heavily criticised for his disappointing performances and pundits such as former Bayern Munich and Barcelona coach Udo Lattek accused the midfielder of joining Koeln just because of the money.
The former Atletico Madrid star has now hit back at his critics though, claiming that they know nothing about football.
"It's nonsense to claim that I only joined Koeln because of the money. I have played at a lot of big clubs and I've made plenty of money. Would I really move to Germany just for the money?" asked Maniche in an interview with Bild. "People who accuse me of something like that don't know anything about football.
"I joined Koeln because I relished the challenge of building a strong team with a lot of youngsters. I had never been involved in such a project before. It's tough to adapt to this new situation though. I've never battled against relegation before.
"I don't know whether I'll stay at Koeln after this season. It's too soon to be thinking about moving on. Additionally, I still have an ongoing contract at Koeln."
