LionsXII will be marking their historic return to the Malaysian league after 17 years in a match that will prove to be a baptism of fire. 2011 Malaysia Super League champions Kelantan FA will be making their trip across the Causeway to provide the first opponents for the Singapore side.
Fresh from their defeat in the Charity Shield, The Red Warriors will have the disadvantage of fatigue on their side, while the home side is looking to count on a sell-out crowd in front of a newly extended 8,000 capacity Jalan Besar Stadium to spur them on.
V.Sundramoorthy, who's had plenty of playing experience across Malaysia in his playing days, will lead his men out against another of his former teams on Tuesday night. Shahril who netted in the side's 1-0 victory against Johor FC will wear the captain's armband, but regular left-back Shaiful Esah who'll be missing with a foot injury for a month will be replaced by 23-year-old Irwan Shah.
Meanwhile for Kelantan, Dennis Antwi is likely to be dropped after his ineffective outing against Negeri with captain Badrul Razi restored to the starting line-up. Mohammad Ghaddar and Norshahrul will continue to lead the line upfront, with both players impressing as partners in the Charity Shield defeat. Defender S. Subramanian is also likely to be employed as their defensive anchor while S. Chanturu looks likely to start from the bench once again.
On paper, Kelantan look absolutely classy. However, it appears that Peter Butler has not found the right formation for his side yet. LionsXII will be eager to kick off their return to the Malaysian league fold in style and will bank on Agu Casmir to be the catalyst upfront. With Butler promising style and susbtance over result, an explosive clash is on the cards at the Jalan Besar Stadium on Tuesday.
Goal.com Malaysia and Singapore editions will be launched later this month.
