Former Melbourne Victory midfielder Fred joins arch-rivals Heart

The Brazilian who helped Victory to the 2007 A-League title has decided to return to Melbourne but to join Heart on a two-year deal
Former Melbourne Victory Grand Final hero Fred has signed with Melbourne Heart.

Fred, 31, was a revelation for Victory during the 2006-07 A-League season before providing four assists in their 6-0 Grand Final triumph over Adelaide United.

The Brazilian midfielder has spent the past four years in the United States with DC United and Philadelphia Union but has now decided to return to Victoria.

Heart, who joined the A-League for the 2010-11 season, were delighted with the addition of Fred, with the club's coach John van 't Schip claiming he would be a crucial creative outlet.

“Fred is a player who the people of Melbourne love and a player we have had an interest in since the club started," said van 't Schip.

"He is a very athletic and skilful player who can change a match with his vision and running.

“Everyone in Melbourne knows his quality and we look forward to his contribution in the Red and White over the coming years.”

Heart are also expected to officially announce the signing of 23-year-old Socceroo David Williams this week.
