UAE club Sharjah FC have been fined USD 413,000 and barred from playing in the AFC Champions League 2010 for withdrawing from the 2009 edition of the continental club competition.
The sanctions, including a warning letter to the UAE FA, were approved in Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday by the AFC Executive Committee.
AFC Executive Committee also recommended the amendment of the
competition regulations to discourage other teams from withdrawing from
AFC competitions in the future.
The above fine is excluding
the compensation for clubs in Sharjah’s group (Persepolis of Iran, Al
Shabab of Saudi Arabia and Al Gharafa of Qatar), which is pending the
submission of claims from the claimants.
The AFC Executive
Committee will consider taking necessary, further action regarding this
matter during its November 2009 meeting.Sharjah FC withdrew from the group stage of the AFC Champions League this year after four matches.
