In unfortunate news for Indian football, HAL SC goalkeeper Arun Kumar passed away on Friday morning at the HAL Medical Complex in Bangalore after suffering a cardiac arrest.
Kumar collided with team-mate Ankit Sharma during a training session on Wednesday, and the player was immediately taken to hospital to be given the required medical treatment for a cracked bone in his leg.
The 24-year-old however complained of breathing problems earlier on Friday morning and was later confirmed dead by doctors.
Ankit Sharma, who used to share the same room with Kumar, was shocked at the turn of events, and narrated the incident to Goal.com.
"I had collided with him on Wednesday in training and then he was taken to the hospital. After the prognosis it was revealed that he has fracture on his right shin bone. There was plaster all over his foot up to his thigh.
"While the doctors advised him to stay in the hospital overnight tor treatment, he chose to come back to the room. He remained indoors throughout Thursday and his mother and brother also visited him that day, with his brother staying overnight.
"This morning [Friday] he was feeling unwell and complained of breathing problems. I informed the team management about it and then he was taken to the hospital, where he was declared dead due to cardiac arrest."
The post-mortem has still to be undertaken, and the exact cause of Kumar's death will be known afterwards. Family members have already reported to HAL complex in Bangalore and are currently in discussion with HAL officials. The club however are also moved at the incident and have promised to do all they can to help their family.
“We are moved by the entire situation. I condemn the loss of Arun, we are currently discussing with his family and will obviously provide all possible help from our end to make up for this loss,” informed HAL SC secretary Mr. R Rajan.
