Former Barcelona Defender Angel Pedraza Dies Aged 48 After Long Illness

Tributes have poured in for former Barcelona, Villarreal and Mallorca defender Angel Pedraza, who died of cancer yesterday at the age of 48.

The Sevilla-born stopper started his career in the Blaugrana youth system, and was given his first break in the Primera Division with a loan spell at the Yellow Submarines.

He then returned to the Camp Nou and featured across the next five seasons, collecting a league title and Copa del Rey, but famously missed in the penalty shoot-out of the 1986 European Cup final against Steaua Bucharest which the Catalan side eventually lost.

He then moved on to Mallorca, where he was a regular in the side from 1988 until 1995, and eventually retired at the end of the 1996-97 season.

His health has deteriorated in the past few months as a result of illness, yet he took over at lower league side L’Hospitalet despite his condition, before leaving in October.

Barca coach Pep Guardiola dedicated Saturday’s 4-0 win over Deportivo to the memory of the former player.
