Messi struck a hat-trick against Sevilla to smash Telmo Zarra's all-time La Liga goalscoring record, with the Argentine's treble him moving his tally to 253 - and counting.
The 27-year-old's achievements soon became the No.1 trending topic in Spain, with #siempremessi - 'Messi forever' - quickly appearing on social media during and after the match at Camp Nou.
And the forward's Barca team-mates were equally effusive in their praise: Rafinha Alcantara called him "the greatest in history"; Andres Iniesta said he was "beyond description"; and Marc Batra professed it was "an honour to play alongside him".
Dani Alves, meanwhile, added: "Today is a very, very great day and I'm lucky to be a team-mate of this phenomenon. Whatever words I give would not be enough. It is an honour to have you as a team-mate and a brother."
