Messi is great but needs international success to become a legend, declares former Brazil star Ronaldo

The ex-striker, who lifted the World Cup in 2002, praised the Barcelona No. 10, but quickly added he must now begin to replicate his exploits at club level with Argentina
Former Brazil striker Ronaldo believes that Barcelona's Lionel Messi is a great player, but needs to achieve success on the international stage to ever be classified as a legend.

The attacker earned universal acclaim for his five-goal performance against Bayer Leverkusen on Wednesday in the Champions League, but the recently-retired marksman now wants the 24-year-old to lead Argentina to glory to catapult himself into the same breath as the likes of Zinedine Zidane and Diego Maradona.

"Messi is great but for me to become a legend like Zidane or Maradona, he must achieve success with the national team. We can not compare him with these great champions," Ronaldo told

"Until Messi lifts the World Cup with Argentina, he will remain as only an excellent player."

Messi is set to take to the field for Barcelona against Racing Santander on Sunday.
